This month our featured guest will be Dr. Joey Pogue, Associate Professor, Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Communications. He will lead us through a discussion on how to conduct a civil debate.

Conflict resolution can occur through second order change. When two people become willing enough to treat each other with unconditional, positive regard, it becomes possible for both parties to transition from one order plagued by power struggles and unresolved issues into a second order where parties affirm each others' existence, engage in empathy, and resolve differences in ways that honor both sides equally. Pogue's workshop will demonstrate this kind of second order change through the use of narrative. Besides shedding light on an innovative approach to conflict resolution, this workshop will also exemplify the use of narrative as a pedagogical tool geared toward understanding ethical dialogue within challenging contexts.

Pecha-kucha nights originated in Amsterdam when young architect Klien Dytham created the concept of a free flow exchange of ideas in a public setting. Since that first PKN event more than 360 cities around the globe have been hosting these fun filled evenings around the world. Tel Aviv just hosted one in which 6,000 people attended. Toykyo Japan has more than 80 night clubs that host these events.

Simply put, it is all about telling a story. You put together a set of 20 slides (pictures, photos, models, etc without bullet points or hyperlinks). Then you tell your story as these slides progress every 20 seconds. Thus you have 6 minutes and 40 seconds to tell your story. There is no stalling on a slide, or waiting for something to load, the slides continue to move forward every 20 seconds.

Come check out what thousands around the world are seeing and enjoying first hand. See PowerPoint presentations done in a way you may never have experienced, and perhaps pick up some ideas for the future.

Event: "Inside Out."  Oct. 22 at 6pm, U-club Overman Student Center"
Description:
Highly recognized as a premier artist in the Christian Contemporary Music genre, Jennifer Knapp chose to confront long-held speculation with a very public “coming out” in 2010. From interviews with CNN, The Advocate & Christianity Today, to countless Internet blogs and a featured appearance on Larry King Live, the main question on everybody’s lips was: “Can you be Gay and Christian?”

Under heavy scrutiny, Jennifer has unashamedly claimed her faith and her sexual orientation with astonishing straightforwardness and honesty. Her candor and compassion have led to overwhelming appeals for her to engage the challenging issue of LGBT inclusion and affirmation in religious communities. In an effort to continue to create a positive and constructive dialogue on behalf of LGBT people of faith Jennifer is now presenting Inside Out Faith. Having experienced, first hand, the devastating effects of rejection and judgment, Jennifer knows full well the challenges of being “out” in certain faith communities. However, it is in the sharing of her journey through story, music and conversation that she has discovered the healing that comes from breaking the silence.

Feburary 22, 2012

Pittsburg State became a licensed site for PKNs January 2011. The event on Feb 22 in the U club of the Overman Center will our 4th event held in Pittsburg. We will have approximately 10-15 presenters, including faculty, students, staff, and community members telling a wide range of stories, from their trips abroad, to research projects, to hobbies and interests. We will present half of these stories, enjoy some refreshments, then hear the rest of the stories. We welcome all of you to come and take part in this historic event and perhaps consider sharing your story at another event this year.

Come check out what thousands around the world are seeing and enjoying first hand. See PowerPoint presentations done in a way you may never have experienced, and perhaps pick up some ideas for the future.

Pecha-kucha is pronounced pa-cho-ku-cha or Peh-cha ku-cha
Event is open to the public
