Graduate Certificate in TESOL – Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Licensure

Online Graduate Certificate

The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Graduate Certificate program is an 18-hour program designed to prepare both licensed and non-licensed teachers to work with English Language Learners in a variety of educational settings in the United States and around the world. All of the courses may be applied to the Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction Degree with an emphasis in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Students may choose to pursue the MS TESOL degree at any time while enrolled in a certificate program or after its completion.

Licensed teachers in Kansas who successfully complete the coursework with a passing score on the ESOL PRAXIS™ can add a PreK-12 endorsement to their existing teaching license. Other states may have additional endorsement requirements. Note: the certificate program does not lead to an initial US teaching license.

This program is accredited by the Kansas State Department of Education and CAEP.

Program features:

  • 18 hours (6 courses)
  • Fully online (asynchronous coursework)
  • Begin in the spring, summer, or fall

You will learn to:

  • teach English while teaching academic content
  • develop and differentiate curriculum
  • support students with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds

Open to U.S. and international candidates with:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Foreign language knowledge not required
  • International students must meet one of the following language requirements:
    • TOEFL score of 550/79
    • IELTS overall band score of 6.5 with no band score below 5.5
    • PTE score of 53
    • Duolingo score of 110 with no section score below 100

  • TCHL 851 Multicultural Approaches to Diversity in the Classroom Summer (June)
  • TCHL 852 Advanced Culture and Language Acquisition for ELLs  Summer (July)
  • TCHL 853 Advanced Assessment and the English Language Learner Spring
  • TCHL 854 Advanced Methods and Instructional Materials for ELLs Fall
  • ENGL 714 Applied Linguistics for English for Speakers of Other Languages Summer (June)
  • TCHL 855 Advanced Practicum with ELLs Fall *

(* taken last; TCHL 854 can be a co-requisite, the rest are pre-requisites)
