College of Education picks award recipients

The College of Education has chosen the Distinguished Service Administrator and the Distinguished Service Teacher award recipients for Fall 2018, to be awarded during the College of Education Recognition Ceremony next week.  

The ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 10, in the Linda and Lee Scott Performance Hall of the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts at Pittsburg State University.   

The awards are given to outstanding administrators and educators whose careers have been highlighted by significant achievement and excellence in education. 

“The College of Education at PSU has a rich tradition of producing accomplished administrators and exemplary teachers,” said James Truelove, dean of the College of Education. “To select individuals from this amazing group of educators was truly a challenging process.” 

This year's administrator award will be presented to Derek Holmes, principal at Concordia Elementary School in Concordia, Kansas, who earned his master’s degree in Education Leadership from PSU in 1999

The Distinguished Service Teacher Award will be presented to Marcia Base, special education teacher at Andover Middle School in Andover, Kansas, who earned her bachelor’s degree in education from PSU in 1981, and her master’s in 1983. 

Truelove said Holmes and Base embody the best of the teaching profession and are dedicated to the students they serve.   

We're proud to be able to recognize the difference they make in our communities and to honor them for representing all the dedicated educators across our state,” he said. 

Also during Monday's ceremony, student teachers from the Fall 2018 semester will be recognized. 

Two of them on tap to graduate on Dec. 14 will receive special honors as PSU Teachers of Promise: Adriel Madison, an elementary education major from Monett, Missouri, who is specializing in early childhood and student teaching in Carl Junction School District, and Madison Freeman, a secondary education major from Commerce, Oklahomawho is specializing in math and student teaching in Miami School District.
