Campus alive with the sound of music

Each summer, the campus is alive with the sound of music, thanks to youth camps and concerts under the direction of the Pittsburg State University Music Department.

On June 5, the Summer Youth Band and the Pittsburg Community Band, performing a variety of music from classics to brand new compositions, kicked off the Sounds of Summer Music Camps concert series. For the next three weeks, the youth music camps and concerts will continue.

June 10

A concert is planned as the culmination of the Josiah Fletcher Jazz Camp, a collaborative effort of the Josiah Fletcher Foundation, the Music Department, and the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts.

It will be held at 6 p.m. on June 10 in the Bicknell Center lobby and will feature big-band style jazz performances by campers, led by alumni of the Music Department. It is free and open to the public.

Young musicians enrolled in Summer PianoFest Camp and ranging from elementary to college level pianists will hold a recital at the conclusion of camp. The concert will begin at 5 p.m. in the performance hall of the Bicknell Center and will feature the Steinway pianos.
