Three Rising Stars to be featured in SEK Symphony concert

Three accomplished student musicians who won the Concerto Aria Competition will be featured in this year’s “Rising Stars” concert by the Southeast Kansas Symphony at Pittsburg State University on Sunday, May 4.

The concert will begin at 3 p.m. in the Linda & Lee Scott Performance Hall at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, 1711 S. Homer. It will be conducted by Assistant Professor Ramiro Miranda and will conclude the symphony's season.

Sara Flessner, soprano

Rising Stars Sara

Flessner is a Music Education major from Neodesha, Kansas, and will graduate this month. Her goal is to teach private voice and music classes at a university; her next step is graduate school.

“I love performing because I personally love the rewards from the persistent work I put into this,” she said. “I just love the stage and creating a musical experience for people and sharing it with them.”

Louie Hurtado, saxophone

Rising Stars Louie

Hurtado is a Music Education and Music Performance (Saxophone) major from Galena, Kansas, and will graduate in December 2027.

His goal is to teach in either conducting, music theory, or jazz studies while performing professionally on the side as much as possible.

“Creating music has been one of the most beautiful things I've kept in my life,” he said. “It has opened up an endless number of opportunities for me and has been a home where I get to express myself emotionally.”

Alex Ramirez-Perez, clarinet

Rising Stars Alex

Ramirez-Perez is a Music Education and Music Performance (Clarinet) major from Grove, Oklahoma, and will graduate in 2028.

His goal is to become a music educator for a public school music program.

“The ability to communicate and tell a story through music is what I enjoy most about performing. This allows me to provide my interpretation of a piece of music with an array of various moods and emotions, building a connection with the listener,” he said. “These experiences, especially when I'm performing with my colleagues, is truly inspiring and fuels my love for the art of creating music.”

Program

The symphony will perform a variety of classical symphonic works by composers such as Ibert, Verdi, and Borodin.
