Six PSU concerts planned for March

Coming this month to the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts and McCray Hall at Pittsburg State University are six musical opportunities open to the campus and community!

The PSU Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, University Choirs, and SEK Symphony will all perform, as well as a noted trio in the Solo & Chamber Music Series, the PSU Jazz Band, and the Yellowjackets.  

March 7

The 51st Annual PSU Jazz Festival concert is planned for 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Auditorium featuring the PSU Jazz Band as the opening act and the Yellowjackets as the headliner. Read more.

March 9 

A choir concert is planned for 3 p.m. March 9 in the Sharon Kay Dean Recital Hall in McCray Hall. It will feature the University Choir and the PSU Chorale. It is free and open to the public. 

It will include works of Joseph Haydn, Felix Mendelssohn, Francis Poulenc, Charles Stanford, William Mathias, Randall Stroope, Cecilia McDowall, David Dickau, and others.   

The program will feature two Celtic expressions: the Hebridean folksong "Eriskay Love Lilt" and the beautiful Scottish "Skye Boat Song." This concert will include two arrangements of songs drawn from films of our time: "Skyfall" and "What Was I Made For?" 

Two of the works will include the massive Fisk Opus 106 organ, featuring organists Caleb Klinzing and Jung Hee Lee. Piano accompaniments will be performed by Isaac Hernandez and Lee; Lee also will conduct the Stanford work.  

Other compositions will be under the direction of Professor Susan Marchant. 

March 13 

The PSU Symphonic Band will perform at 7 p.m. March 13 in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts.  

The symphonic band consists of student musicians from across campus and is directed by Assistant Professor Jobey Wilson.

The band will perform “Havendance” by David Holsinger, “Legend of the Honjo” by Christina Huss, “Steel” by Randall Standridge, and “Sentinel” by Robert Sheldon. 

March 25 

The PSU Percussion Ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. on March 25.

Their program will include five pieces: “Nagoya Marimbas” by Steve Reich, “Shell” by Emma O’Halloran, “Stardust” by Clark Hubbard, “The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows: ambedo” by Annika Socolofsky, and “Blindness” by Issac Schankler.

The pieces will be performed on a variety of percussion instruments.  

The ensemble is directed by Assistant Instructional Professor Michael Giunta. 

March 28 

The final concert in this season’s Solo & Chamber Music Series will be held at 7:30 p.m. March 28 in the Sharon Kay Dean Recital Hall in McCray Hall.

It will feature the Flora Trio, comprised of noted musicians Stephen Ahearn, Haley Hoops, and Anastasia Markina, each a member of the Dallas Symphony. 

Tickets are on sale now. They are free to full-time Pitt State students with valid student ID; $10 for youth under 18 and those over 65; and $15 for the general public.    

Tickets can be purchased at the PSU Ticket Office, Room 107 in the Weede Building, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by calling the Ticket Office at 620-235-4796, or online at pittstate.edu/tickets   

They also may be purchased at the door 30 minutes prior to the concert, based on availability. 

March 30 

To close out the month, the SEK Symphony will perform at 3 p.m. on March 30 at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts.  

This is the group's “Masterworks” concert, featuring Dvorak’s “6th Symphony” and music by composer Andrew Maxfield.  

The symphony, comprised of students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members, is directed by Associate Professor Ramiro Miranda. 

Tickets are on sale now for $12 for the public and $8 for senior citizens. The concert is free to youth under age 18 and to anyone with a Pitt State ID.
