Pitt State plans holiday concerts

For many years, holiday concerts at Pittsburg State University have been a symbol that the season is just around the corner. This year, there will be two: one that is a tradition of more than 50 years, and one that is quickly becoming a tradition.

Sounds of the Season: Holiday Music Around the World

Holiday concert

Experience the magic of the holiday season as the Southeast Kansas Symphony once again performs a selection of music for the yuletide celebrations — from favorites like Leroy Anderson's “Sleigh Ride" to new additions like “African Holy Night,” “Hanukkah Festival Overture,” and "Ukranian Carol of the Bells” — in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, 1711 S. Homer.

The Pittsburg Hispanic Banda, directed by recent graduate Isaac Hernandez, from Mexico, also will perform several selections this year.

“A Christmas Festival” will provide an opportunity for audience members to sing along with popular favorites like “Joy to the World,” “Deck the Halls,” and “Jingle Bells.”

The Symphony is comprised of students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members, and is directed by Assistant Professor Ramiro Miranda.

Tickets are on sale now for $12 for the public and $8 for senior citizens. The concert is free to youth under age 18 and to anyone with a Pitt State ID.a

They may be purchased in advance at the PSU Ticket Office, 107 Weede Gymnasium, online at pittstate.edu/tickets, or by calling 620-235-4796. Tickets also will be available for purchase at the door starting one hour before each concert.

Timmons Chapel Holiday Concert

Holiday concert 2

For more than 50 years, the PSU Department of Music has presented an annual holiday concert in Timmons Chapel. This year’s concert will feature seasonal classical music as well as traditional carols performed by students, faculty, and community members.

This year’s concert is being directed by Professor of Music Joanne Britz and is free and open to the public.

Staff from the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts will record the live performance and will broadcast the concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8 at pittstate.tv and on their Facebook page, for anyone who was unable to attend the live concert.

The recording will be archived for future viewing on demand.

Timmons Chapel, located near the University Lake at 409 E. Ford Ave., is a Gothic-style, all-faiths chapel completed in 1966 as a gift to the university from longtime benefactor Beth Spiva Timmons, born in Galena, Kansas, in 1901.
