The Pittsburg State University Choir and Chorale will present a variety of works drawn from choral repertoire of the Renaissance through the 21st Century in a concert that will begin at 7 p.m. on Nov. 3 in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, 1711 S. Homer.
This program, under the direction of Professor Susan Marchant, will be free and open to the public.
As the next concert in the Solo & Chamber Music Series, The Gesualdo Six will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 10 in the Sharon Kay Dean Recital Hall in McCray Hall.
The group is a British vocal ensemble comprising some of the United Kingdom’s finest singers and directed by Owain Park. Praised for their imaginative programming and impeccable blend, the ensemble has performed at numerous major festivals across the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, and Australia.
The group released their debut recording, “English Motets,” in early 2018 to critical acclaim, followed by a festive album of seasonal favorites in late 2019, and a recent album titled “Fading.”
Tickets are free to full-time PSU students with valid student ID; $10 for youth under 18 and those over 65; and $15 for the general public.
Tickets can be purchased at the PSU Ticket Office in the Garfield Weede Building between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by calling the Ticket Office at 620-235-4796, or online at pittstate.edu/tickets They also may be purchased at the door 30 minutes prior to each concert, based on availability.
The PSU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo, along with the SEK KMEA District Jazz Band, will perform at 7 p.m. on Nov. 15 in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, 1711 S. Homer. It is free and open to the public.
The PSU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo are directed by Professor Todd Hastings and will be playing a mix of standards and contemporary tunes.
The District Jazz Band, comprised of selected high school students who auditioned from across Southeast Kansas, will be directed by Ryan Heinlein, who has been playing trombone professionally since age 15. He holds a doctorate of musical arts from the Conservatory of Music and Dance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and performs regularly with numerous notable jazz bands and big bands.
The PSU Wind Ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. on Nov. 30 in the Bicknell Center. It is free and open to the public. Conducted by Associate Professor of Music Andrew Chybowski, the ensemble is comprised of students from Pittsburg State University who were chosen based on audition.
The concert, entitled “Dream On,” will feature music by and for people with big dreams: In the words of composer David Maslanka, music lets us tell ourselves things we can’t speak out in words. It opens the dream space and lets us dream together.
His epic composition California opens the program with a musical invitation to create a better world by dreaming big. Ralph Vaughan Williams used rural folk songs to achieve his dream of a uniquely English style of music, and Lawren Brianna Ware paints a dreamscape of an ancient Mayan god who has the power to create and destroy.
This concert also will feature the world premiere of a composition by Pitt State's own composer in residence, Professor John Ross. Titled Scars that Never Felt a Wound, this work is inspired by William Shakespeare.
