The PSU Honorary Family award dates to 1993 and is sponsored by the PSU Foundation and the Advancement Ambassadors. Recipients are selected by a committee of alumni, students, and staff, based on a student-submitted nomination and essays about the student’s family involvement, school spirit, and Gorilla legacy.
Chloe's father, Jeremy, graduated in 1997 with a bachelor’s in commercial graphics, and as a student he worked in the Office of Admission helping to recruit prospective students.
Having held many positions with the Alumni Association since graduating, today he is serving as the 1st Vice President on the Board of Directors. He spends time planning and promoting the Wichita Area Gorilla Gatherings to help keep other alumni connected and involved. Chloe's mom, Pam, supports that involvement.
Throughout high school and college, Chloe’s brother Jacob, now 26, dressed up as Gus Gorilla on multiple occasions for special events. He met his future wife, Morgan, while working in the Alumni office; they celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary on Family Day.
Chloe recalls her own connection to Pittsburg State starting early.
“As a kid, we always drove to Pittsburg from Wichita to watch the home football games,” she said. “It was always so fun and bonding to take a little road trip to watch football together as a family.”
“My dad is a very proud Pittsburg State University alumni and that definitely played a huge role in my brother and I choosing our college,” she added. "It’s a huge part of our family and has made a great impact on us.”
Today, Chloe is active on campus as a leader and volunteer, taking a cue from the rest of her family members, who have found many ways to get involved in their community and to give back.
“Being in Alpha Gamma Delta has definitely kept me involved through performing at Yell Like Hell, cheering on my roommate in the float races at the University Lake, creating floats for the Homecoming parade, donating to the Gorilla Food Pantry, and my personal favorite: being part of the Big Event that is put on by the Student Government Association,” she said. “The Big Event is my favorite because we get to give back to the community that supports this college so much by helping out elderly people with yard work and tasks around their yard.”
And the family road trips to Pittsburg continue.
“We live for the amazing football gameday atmosphere here and it truly brings us together as a family especially now with my parents being empty nesters. They come down to every home game so that we can continue to have fun as a family while watching the sport and team that we love,” Chloe said. “Throughout my time at Pittsburg State, I have made so many forever friends and memories and I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
Jeremy said the family was surprised and honored.
“This was a perfect way for Chloe to finish up her undergrad in December,” he said, “and being able to also take our granddaughter to the game and let her be a part of such a strong tradition hopefully will instill in her the same love for Pittsburg State that I have had for over 30 years.”
