Manufacturing Re-shoring Initiative is moving forward in Pittsburg

An initiative is moving forward that would bring jobs to the region and production of a resource used widely by farmers and ranchers.

As part of the National Institute for Materials Advancement’s (NIMA) Manufacturing Re-shoring Initiative, funds are being sought to build a 15,000-square-foot prove-out facility next to the Tyler Research Center at Pittsburg State University.

The facility would be located on nine acres of land allocated by the City of Pittsburg for development as a research park.

The anticipated cost is approximately $6.5 million. It is projected, over the next 10 years, to support the generation of more than 200 high paying, technology-based jobs and an estimated $100 million in capital investment, including satellite support businesses.

If successful, the first project at the facility would be re-shoring hay net wrap production to the region. First proposed by a local farmer’s co-op during a regional conference because of supply chain difficulties, Pittsburg High School students enrolled in the Launch Program got busy researching the economic viability of the product. [Read more here]

“The addition of this facility will greatly enhance NIMA's ability to bring new technology-based manufacturing jobs to the region,” said Tim Dawsey, executive director of the Kansas Polymer Research Center which is based in the Tyler Research Center.

Dawsey and his team of scientists, along with the Small Business Development Center, worked closely with Launch students to prepare a business plan and financial outlook.

“This will give our region the opportunity to produce something very valuable to our area, while at the same time creating high-paying jobs — all by leveraging the expertise and resources we have right here at the KPRC,” said Tim Dawsey, executive director of the Kansas Polymer Research Center which is based in the Tyler Research Center.
