Pitt State Theatre to bring unique comedy-thriller to life

A unique comedy-thriller that promises fun for the audience will be brought to life this month in the Dotty and Bill Miller Theater in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts at Pittsburg State University.

Called “The 39 Steps,” it’s an adaptation of Hitchcock’s classic spy film that feels as if a dash of Monty Python humor has been added.

The unique part?

It will feature more than 30 characters played by a cast of just four actors: Matthew Buck, of Pittsburg; Madison Correll, of Leavenworth, Kansas; Taylor Matthews of Nevada, Missouri; and Matthew Parrot, of Joplin, Missouri.

Produced by Pitt State Theatre and directed by Gil Cooper, showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24-26 and 2 p.m. Feb. 26-27.

The plot: Mild-mannered Richard Hannay begins his evening at the theater and ends the night finding a dead body in his apartment. He soon is on the run to search for a plausible alibi, to seek the killer’s identity, and to stop a secret organization called The 39 Steps from stealing British military secrets.

It’s a cross country chase filled with laughs, an evil mastermind, bumbling minions, missing fingers, and good old-fashioned romance. The two-time Tony Award and Drama Desk Award winning play, adapted by playwright Patrick Barlow, is a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre.

“The spy adventure is an incredibly popular genre and what better way to enjoy it than with a play that loves the genre enough to have fun with it?” Cooper said. “The play is highly theatrical. It basically says ‘hey, you’re in the theatre, we know it, you know it, so let’s have a good time!’.’”

The design team includes Scenic/Lighting/Sound Designer Linden Little and Costume/Props Designer Lisa Quinteros, both veterans of theater who, like Cooper, teach in the Department of Communication.
