Now in its fifth year, Gorilla Giving Day will feature special challenges to raise funds and awareness for departments and programs.
The date is not a coincidence: it’s also Apple Day, one of the university’s oldest standing traditions. It celebrates the commemoration of the first building appropriation secured by Principal Russell S. Russ and school supporters in 1907.
“We already know that one person can make a difference. Our history proves that. And now we're calling on you to make a difference too,” said Kati Karleskint, director of annual giving.
Previous challenges have included faculty from Graphics and Imaging Technologies taking pies to the face after alumni contributed $550 for that department; faculty from Teaching and Leadership dancing their way to raising $325 for that department; and Jon Bartlow, director of Alumni & Constituent Relations, shaving his head after $2,925 was raised for the Alumni Legacy Scholarship Fund, which supports incoming students who are children and grandchildren of PSU alumni.
This year’s challenges include:
Weaver New Donor Challenge
Brandon and Erin Weaver (MS ’15) have provided funds to match first-time donor gifts up to $250 per gift.
Crimson & Gold Nation Challenge
Alumni, friends of the university, faculty, and staff are challenged to give from all 50 states, plus Washington, D.C. & Puerto Rico. One lucky donor will unlock an additional $250 for their college, program, or cause they support.
Crimson & Gold Global Challenge
The goal: gifts from alumni, friends, and other supporters in 15 different countries. One lucky international donor will unlock an additional $250 for their college, program, or cause they support.
Alumni Legacy Scholarship Tattoo Challenge
Bartlow is back with another challenge: his goal is to raise $5,000 for the Alumni Legacy Scholarship. If successful, he will get a gorilla tattoo on his right arm.
Nature Reach - Give a Slice of the Pie Challenge
The Biology Department’s Nature Reach Program Coordinator Delia Lister and her student staff will each take a pie to the face if they meet their goal of raising $1,000 for Nature Reach.
Pitt Power Student Projects Challenge
Pitt Power is an online fundraising platform designed to provide students a way to seek support for their projects. The College of Technology currently has four senior Pitt Power projects.
Memories Monday Challenge - Social Media Challenge
Alumni are encouraged to post a throwback photo from their time at Pittsburg State or at a Pittsburg State event, and add the hashtag #GorillaGivingDay to be eligible for a drawing. One lucky winner will receive Pittsburg State items.
“Each challenge has always been, and continues to be, unique. It's a great way for departments to raise awareness for their needs and to encourage giving back to Pittsburg State,” said Kati Karleskint, director of annual giving.
How to give:
Alumni and friends of the university can expect emails and social media posts with challenge information and specific links for giving. Details also can be found at pittstate.edu/givingday
