Gorilla Connection: In just one week

The campus is alive with academics and activities. Here's a snapshot of what has happened in just one week!

Sept. 23 to Sept. 28

 Wind Ensemble

Students in the PSU Wind Ensemble got to perform for a live audience Sept. 23 in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts as they kicked off their season of in-person concerts. What better way to open than with the iconic score to Star Wars, by composer John Williams? (You can hear it here.)

Nursing Event

Also on Sept. 23, students, staff, and faculty in the Irene Ransom Bradley School of Nursing hosted visitors from the Rita Bicknell Women’s Health Fund to show them the impact that philanthropy has had on health in Southeast Kansas. They demonstrated patient simulators funded by the WHF that are providing our nursing students a realistic way to learn. Courtesy: Community Health Center of SEK

Choir

On Sept. 24, the University Choir and University Choral brought back the annual fundraiser, the Choir Dinner, but with modifications: in addition to Broadway-themed tunes, guests were treated to boxed desserts to take home and enjoy. About 70 students are enrolled in the two groups, with all getting course credit and many getting scholarships. Courtesy: Alyssa Tyler / Collegio

Family Day

The long running tradition of Family Day returned to campus Sept. 25 after a brief absence last year. At halftime, President Steve Scott formally recognized this year’s Honorary Family, the Thompson family. It includes John and Debbie – both Pitt State employees — and their children, Caleb and Anna, who are both students.

Football

Also that night, fans of all ages got a chance to see a home win by the Gorillas, who beat the Emporia Hornets 30-28 in front of a sold-out crowd.

book talk

Library Services and the Department of English hosted noted author Chris Crutcher on Sept. 28 for two events: a mini conference for high school students throughout the region, held at the Overman Student Center, and an event that evening open to students, staff, faculty, and the public that featured a Q&A with the author and a book signing.
