Overview
The Department of Mathematics and Physics offers a Master of Science Degree with a Major in Physics. Students in this degree program will work one-on-one with an advisor to design a program of study that matches their individual career goals. Elective courses, subject to approval of the department, are usually selected from physics, chemistry, mathematics, and/or biology. Incoming students are required to take a diagnostic examination on undergraduate physics during the first semester.

Options available for the degree include:
Option I: Thesis
This option is designed to prepare students for a doctoral program, advanced professional careers, or for students wanting to complete an in-depth research experience.
Option II: Research Problem
This option is designed to provide a research experience that can include a specific problem, creative and aesthetic efforts such as performances, exhibits, or creative programs, or an internship.
- Ph.D. program candidates for physics, meteorology, or astronomy
- Data collection and analysis in fields such as aviation, energy, programming, and medical
- Start a small company as an entrepreneur and inventor in aviation, electronics, and solid state physics
About Physics Department
The Department of Physics at Pittsburg State University was founded in 1962 and has been dedicated to the outstanding teaching of undergraduate and graduate physics students ever since. Our faculty members are trained in a wide variety of physics-related fields and have industrial and research laboratory experience.
