Overview


The History education program prepares students who want to teach social studies at the middle and high school levels. Students who graduate with a Bachelor of Science with a Major in History and Emphasis in History Education and who pass the state teaching exams are licensed to teach History, Government, Geography, Economics, and Psychology.

Graduates of this program have the benefit of a strong education in History and Political Science, which means they have the ability to find and analyze evidence, present an argument, impeach competing arguments, and coherently present the results of their research in both speaking and writing. Past PSU History/Government graduates have secured employment in education, law enforcement, business, and government. Others have gone on to do graduate studies in Law, Political Science, and History.

The History program at Pittsburg State University offers courses in a wide variety of topics in World and American History. Recent offerings include the histories of Ireland, Japanese Women, Military Aviation, the Modern Middle East, World War I, the United States from 1941-1968, the American Revolution, and the American South.

Our lecture courses, small colloquium/seminar sections, and internships (100% placement rate) all offer excellent student-teacher ratios and mentoring for students pursuing this degree.
