Summer brings sound of music

Summer music

The Pittsburg State University campus will be alive with the sound of music this summer as it plays host to the Chamber Music Festival in June and the Piano Festival in July, as well as a hand bell festival and a summer youth opportunity. Most concerts will be free. 

On June 2, the Bells of the Balkans and other area hand bell choirs will perform in the Bell Festival from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Lee & Linda Scott Performance Hall at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the door starting at 6:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Bicknell Center and by the Pittsburg Treble Clef Club. 

Chamber Music Festival 

From June 18-23, the Sixth Annual Chamber Music Festival will bring together some of the finest musicians in the Four State Area, said organizer Raul Munguia, assistant professor of music.   

A collaborative effort by the Bicknell Center, the PSU Music Department, and with support from the Colonial Fox Theater, the Treble Clef Club, generous donors, and professional artists in the area, this year's Chamber Music Festival once again promises high level of performances, Munguia noted.  

On June 18, the Treble Clef Club is bringing in The Raleigh Ringers, an internationally acclaimed concert hand bell choir, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Lee & Linda Scott Performance Hall in the Bicknell Center. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the door an hour before the concert.  

On June 19, the Summer Wind Band, comprised of students, faculty, alumni, and community from throughout the area, will perform a free outdoor concert at 8:30 p.m. on the front lawn of the Bicknell Center. Those attending should bring lawn chairs or blankets. Performing just prior to the Summer Wind Band at 8:15 p.m. will be the Summer Wind Youth Ensemble, comprised of middle and high school student musicians. 

On June 20, the Summer Kicks Jazz Band will perform a free outdoor concert at 8:30 p.m. on the front lawn of the Bicknell Center. 

On June 21, a free concert titled “Kaleidoscope of Styles” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in the Sharon K. Dean Recital Hall in McCray HallPSU faculty, students, and community members will collaborate to form different types of ensembles, including duos, trios, quartets, and quintets.   

On June 22, a concert titled “The Eight Seasons” will be performed by violinist Munguia and the Festival Chamber Players, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lee & Linda Scott Performance HallTickets are $12 and may be purchased at the door an hour before the performance. A reception will follow.  

On June 23, Corky Siegel's Chamber Blues will perform at the Colonial Fox Theater 407 N. Broadway, guiding the blues out of the smoky caverns of Big John's & Pepper's Lounge and onto the stages of the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and beyond. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased at www.colonialfox.org. 

Pittsburg Piano Festival 

The Treble Clef Club of Pittsburg presents the 2018 Pittsburg Piano Festival. Back for its second year, it offers pianists ages 7 to 30 a piano competition and the chance to win hundreds of dollars in prize money.  

The festival will kick off with a day of competition on July 11, with a free recital by the winner at 4 p.m. in the Dotty & Bill Miller Theatre in the Bicknell Center. 

On July 12, Teng Fu, the winner of last year’s Young Artist Award Competition, will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Lee & Linda Scott Performance Hall. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the door an hour before the performance. 

On July 13, this year’s festival competition winners and Teng Fu, along with the Festival Orchestra, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Lee & Linda Scott Performance Hall. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the door an hour before the performance. 

On July 14, the Happy Dog Duo will perform a concert with the Festival Orchestra in the Lee & Linda Scott Performance Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the door an hour before the performance.
