Alumni Office connecting generations of Gorillas

As assistant director of Pittsburg State’s Office of Alumni and Constituent Relations, Meagan Swafford has helped organize hundreds of alumni gatherings. But she holds a special place in her heart for meetings that take place in July.

“We always invite new freshmen and their parents to these gatherings,” said Swafford. “It warms my heart to see alumni sharing their love of Pittsburg State with our newest students. Mom and Dad are normally a bit anxious because their children are leaving home, but our alumni reassure them that everything will be fine.”

Known as“Gorilla Gatherings,” this year’s events will take place at sports stadiums in Kansas City, Wichita and Springdale, AR., with stops to watch Sporting KC, the Wichita Wingnuts and Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Special guests from Pitt State’s Admission Office will be on hand at each stop to help answer enrollment and financial questions for students and parents.

“There are few better places to be during the summer than at the ballpark,” said Swafford. “Or in the case of Kansas City, at Children’s Mercy Park. We’ll provide a great meal, fun program and tickets to the game at each stop. It’s a fun way to see old friends, meet new ones and learn about what’s new at the university.”

Registration for the Sporting KC event, which takes place on July 6, have closed but there is still space available for the Gorilla Gatherings at the Wichita Wingnuts (July 11) and the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (July 13). The cost is just $20 per adult and $15 for students. Children 2 and under are free.

“Registration is just a click away,” said Swafford. “Just visit us online at pittstate.edu/alumni or give us a call at 620-235-4758. We always love to hear from our Gorillas.”
