Memorial Day observance May 29

In conjunction with the national multi-year 50th anniversary commemoration of the Vietnam War, Veterans of the Vietnam War will receive special recognition at this year’s Memorial Day observance at the Pittsburg State University Veterans Memorial. The event, set for 10 a.m. on Monday, May 29, is sponsored by the Friends of the Memorial and Pittsburg State ROTC, with support from the Pritchett Trust.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Brig. Gen. (Ret.) James M. AuBuchon, a Vietnam Veteran and former vice president for university advancement at PSU.

In addition to remarks from AuBuchon and PSU President Steve Scott, the program will include special music by bagpiper Dorothy May, of the St. Andrews Pipes and Drums. The National Anthem and “Taps” will be played by trumpeter Trey Wadell and all veterans and their families will be recognized.

Ten new pavers, recently installed in the memorial, will be dedicated. Those pavers honor Johnie Baima, Palmo Bosetti, Jon Burchfield, LeRoy Charters, Dwight Gallop, Paul E. Milburn, George Shoemaker, Larry G. Weaver, Father Joe Weber, and veterans from the PHS Class of 1967.

Shortly after the Memorial Day ceremony, volunteers will begin reading the 58,288 names inscribed on the Vietnam Wall, a half-scale version of which is a major feature in the PSU memorial. Each of the volunteers will read 270 names over a 20-minute period.

Gen. AuBuchon will begin the reading of the names, which will continue until midnight. Volunteer readers will resume at 6 a.m. Tuesday. The reading will continue, from 6 a.m. until midnight daily, until the last names are read, which is expected to take place at about 1 p.m. on Friday, June 2. A brief ceremony will be held to mark the conclusion of the reading.

The PSU Veterans Memorial is located at 1909 S. Rouse, Pittsburg, Kan.
