PSU student groups honored for peer education

Pittsburg State University’s Gorilla Peer Education group, which is comprised of Gorillas in Your Midst and Students for Violence Prevention, was named the Outstanding Peer Education Group at the BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA General Assembly, held in Kansas City in November. Additionally, the group presented three programs at the meeting.

Along with Ali Smith, adviser and campus victim advocate, Students for Violence Prevention presented “Paint Your Campus Purple,” which outlined their month-long program that combined awareness projects, programming and events to increase awareness of domestic/dating violence and develop a campus conversation on these and other relationship issues.

Adviser J.T. Knoll and Gorillas In Your Midst presented “Gorilla Training 101,” an interactive program designed to teach advisers and peer educators creative ways to use dramatic techniques in addressing campus health issues.

The two groups joined together to present “The Gorilla Mental Health Toolbox,” the PSU program that provides students simple and accessible ways to manage stress, anxiety and depression, as well as address the stigma that prevents many students from reaching out for support.

The BACCHUS General Assembly is held yearly in different cities across the nation to provide hundreds of peer educators and advisers an opportunity to network, share ideas and develop new programs through the power of peer education.

Last fall, PSU’s Students for Violence Prevention received the Outstanding Prevention Program award at the NASPA General Assembly for “P.S. I Love You: Stalking Awareness Evening” and Gorillas In Your Midst won the 2014-2015 Meeting of the Minds Area 4 Outstanding Program Award for Excellence for their month-long program "Love Your Body Month."

At the spring 2016 Meeting of the Minds Area 4 West conference, Smith received the Outstanding Adviser Award For Excellence for her work as adviser, trainer and mentor for Students for Violence Prevention. Students for Violence Prevention, meanwhile, received the Outstanding Program Award For Excellence for their Domestic Violence Awareness Month program.
