PSU joins global Hour of Code

Computer science experts at Pittsburg State University are joining those from around the world to help K-12 students learn how to code.

The Hour of Code campaign is part of Computer Science Education Week, Dec. 5-11. The campaign is aimed at expanding computer science lessons to students in elementary, middle and high schools.

This week, PSU’s computer science professionals are visiting area schools to teach coding to elementary and middle school students. Peter Rosen, chair of PSU's accounting and computer information systems office, said the university is proud to be a part of this year’s Hour of Code event.

“The Hour of Code campaign is a fantastic way of promoting and teaching coding to area students,” Rosen said. “We love being able to reach out and visit area schools to talk to them about computer science, which is an incredibly important field of study in today’s digital world.”

Pitt State faculty and staff visited Pittsburg Community Middle School on Monday and Tuesday this week.

They’ll visit Frontenac’s Frank Layden Elementary School from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday. On Friday, they’ll be at George Nettels Elementary School from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. and 11 to noon. They’ll also visit Westside Elementary School from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday.
