Horner honored for excellence in management education

Associate Professor Stephen Horner has been recognized for excellence in education in the field of management.

Horner, associate professor of management and marketing in Pittsburg State University’s Kelce College of Business, was recently selected to receive an Outstanding Educator Award from the Federation of Business Disciplines. The award, presented by the Southwest Academy of Management (SWAM), recognizes educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching and serve as leaders and mentors to others in management education.

Horner will be recognized in March during the annual SWAM meeting, which is held in conjunction with the Federation of Business Disciplines annual meeting.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled by this award,” Horner said. “I love working with our students in Kelce, and to be recognized by peers in the field is a tremendous distinction. It is particularly gratifying to receive this award as a member of the Pitt State faculty.”

Horner received his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri (2006), his Masters of Business Administration (1991) and his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science (1975) from Emporia State University. He completed post-graduate work at Wichita State University in 1994. His research in corporate governance has focused on the impact of boards of directors on firm strategic outcomes including post-acquisition performance and CEO turnover and succession.

Horner currently teaches the capstone courses in strategic management for both the BBA and MBA programs.

He is a member of the Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society, Southern Management Association, and Southwest Academy of Management, for which he served as officer and member of the board for more than five years.
