Symphony season begins Oct. 21

The Southeast Kansas Symphony will open its 2016-17 season on Friday, Oct. 21, with a concert entitled “Russian Giants.” The concert, at 7:30 p.m. in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, will feature Hyerim Mapp, Pittsburg State University cello Instructor, performing Tchaikovsky’s “Roccoco Variations” for cello and orchestra.

Raúl A. Munguía, artistic director and conductor of the symphony, said the program includes the “Overture to Ruslan & Ludmilla” by Mikhail Glinka and “Pictures at an Exhibition,” by Mussorgsky/Ravel.

“We will conclude the evening with the exciting “Danzón” No.2 by the Mexican composer Arturo Márquez,” Munguía said. “This piece was selected by the students who will be performing with the orchestra for the last time, because they will be student-teaching in the spring semester.”

The symphony will present this concert again at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23, at the First United Methodist Church in Carthage, Mo. That concert will be free of charge, thanks to the Carthage Council on the Arts.
