PSU hosts diversity conference Oct. 24-25

Pittsburg State University will host the Michael Tilford Conference on Diversity and Multiculturalism on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 24-25. The annual conference provides an opportunity for faculty, staff, and administrators at Kansas Regents' institutions to discuss diversity in higher education.

The conference opens at 6:15 p.m. on Monday with an address by Marché Fleming-Randle, assistant to the president for diversity and senior assistant dean of liberal arts and sciences at Wichita State University. Fleming-Randle will speak on “The Struggle is Real: Staying Right Side Up When Things Are Turned Upside Down.”

The conference moves to the Overman Student Center on Tuesday for a day filled with workshops and focus groups. Topics for the workshop cover a wide range of diversity issues.

The featured speaker for the day is Terrell Lamont Strayhorn, director of the Center for Higher Education Enterprise at Ohio State University, where he is also a professor of higher education in the College of Education and Human Ecology. Strayhorn will speak on “Cultivating Success: Why Belonging Really Matters,” at 9:30 a.m. in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom.

The annual Tilford conference is named in honor of the late Michael Tilford, who was the Wichita State University representative on the Kansas Board of Regents Diversity and Multiculturalism Committee from its formation in 1994 until his death in 1996.
