PSU celebrates Weede Building renovation Friday

Pittsburg State University will celebrate completion of a four-year, nearly $5 million project to remodel the Garfield Weede Building with an open house from 4:30-6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21.

“It’s exciting to finally see the project complete,” said Jim Johnson, director of intercollegiate athletics. “In many ways, it’s even better than we imagined. I think people will like what they see.”

The total project began with a $1.2 million lead gift from alumni Alan and Roberta Whetzel, for the remodeling of John Lance Arena. Since then, donors have supported work that has been completed in phases while the building remained in use.

The completion of the overall project means nearly every space and surface in the building, completed in 1971, is new. That includes an extended entryway, coaches’ offices, locker rooms, the mezzanine and new champions club, a new lecture hall and sports medicine center and even a new athletics Hall of Fame Wall.

Visitors on Friday will be able to take self-guided tours to see all of the improvements.

A brief program, featuring President Steve Scott and Paula Baker, president and CEO of Freeman Health Systems, will take place at 5 p.m. in the new lecture hall. The event will be live streamed on www.pittstate.tv.
