Nursing students lead hair donation drive

Attention, Pittsburg State students. Sara Huffaker has a favor to ask.

“Don’t cut your hair … yet.”

Huffaker, a senior PSU nursing student from Overland Park, is organizing a ponytail donation drive that will take place on Feb. 4, 2017. Hair donations, which support the American Cancer Society, must be at least eight inches in length.

Huffaker is the Breakthrough to Nursing Program Leader in the Pittsburg State chapter of the Kansas Association of Nursing Students (KANS), the organization conducting the donation drive.

“So if you have long hair and are thinking about cutting it off, try to wait until February,” Huffaker said. “Your hair will go toward helping to make wigs for cancer patients.”

The donation drive will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 4 at McPherson Hall, home of Pitt State’s Irene Ransom Bradley School of Nursing. The hair will be cut by professionals from Pittsburg’s Wild Side Salon.

Huffaker said she’s donated her hair every two years since the fourth grade.

“When I was young, I saw something in the newspaper about donating hair for cancer patients,” she said. “I knew I had long enough hair, and I wanted to help. I’ve been doing it ever since, and now I’m excited to get my fellow Gorillas on board.”
