Singer Polly Gibbons opens Bicknell Center series

The 2016-17 Performance Series at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts gets underway on Friday, Sept. 16, with a performance by internationally acclaimed jazz singer Polly Gibbons.

Gibbons broke onto the international jazz music scene in 2006 with a BBC Jazz Award nomination and since has become one of the most respected young singer/songwriters of her generation.

Over the past decade, Gibbons has developed her craft, performing in all the leading jazz clubs in the United Kingdom, as well as international festivals. Her debut UK jazz album was released to critical acclaim in 2014, winning the Indie International Song Writing Competition that year.

Gibbons signed to U.S. jazz label Resonance Records in 2014 and recorded the album “Many Faces of Love,” which was released globally in 2015.

Gibbons said her influences are broad and inspired and include the poetry of Joni Mitchell, the be-bop of Charlie Parker, the power of Mahalia Jackson’s gospel, the soul of Marvin Gaye, the emotional depth of Billie Holiday, and even the more contemporary sounds of Prince.

Tickets for the performance range from $23 to $30 and may be purchased at the PSU Ticket Office, 1701 S. Homer, 620-235-4796, www.pittstate.edu/tickets. For more information on the Bicknell Center Performance Series, visit www.bicknellcenter.com.
