Sax quartet to perform

Antoine-Joseph Sax invented numerous instruments, including the saxotromba, the saxhorn and the saxtuba. Fortunately for music lovers, one of his instruments, the saxophone, which he perfected in 1846, caught on. The full range of that now very popular instrument will be on display when the Pittsburg State University Solo and Chamber Music Series hosts the Donald Sinta Quartet at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, in the Sharon K. Dean Recital Hall in McCray Hall on the PSU campus.

The Donald Sinta Quartet, named for its mentor, University of Michigan Saxophone Professor Donald Sinta, was formed in 2010 and quickly achieved international recognition for its recitals, concerto performances and for the quartet’s completely memorized presentations.

The quartet’s competition successes include the Alice Coleman Grand Prize at the Coleman Chamber Music Competition and first prizes in both the Concert Artists Guild Competition and the North American Saxophone Alliance Quartet competition.

The ensemble has toured widely throughout the U.S. and internationally, including appearances at recitals in Europe and a trip to Japan as one of a select group of ensembles chosen for the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition.

The quartet’s repertoire is diverse and includes commissions by modern emerging composers and the classics.

Tickets for the performance are $12 for general admission and $8 for persons over 65 or under 18. Tickets are available at no charge for full-time PSU students with ID. Tickets are available at the PSU Ticket Office, 1701 S. Homer, 620-235-4796, www.pittstate.edu/tickets.
