Online history masters program ranked in the top 6

Pittsburg State University has been ranked sixth in the nation on the GradSource.com list of “Best Online Master’s Degree Programs in History.” The website offers comparative information on academic programs and careers for people thinking about graduate and doctoral degrees.

Barbara Bonnekessen, chair of PSU’s Department of History, Philosophy and Social Sciences, said she is very happy about the national recognition that the department’s online master’s degree in history has received.

"The History faculty is very dedicated to our graduate students and strives for the perfect balance between the convenience of a fully online program and the personal interaction and support of a face-to-face program,” Bonnekessen said. “We are delighted to be included in this listing and are especially proud of the recognition that, despite a small faculty and high undergraduate demands, we offer specialized courses not found elsewhere.”

Bonnekessen said many of the department’s history graduates are secondary teachers in the four-state area.

“The quality of our master’s program has a direct impact on the quality of public schools in southeast Kansas and beyond,” Bonnekessen said.

According to Mark Burnham, general manager at GradSource.com, the company considers a number of factors when compiling their rankings, including tuition, flexibility and student success.
