Choirs present American Tapestry

The Pittsburg State University Choirs, under the direction of Susan Marchant, will present a dinner performance, “An American Tapestry,” at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom of the Overman Student Center. The deadline to purchase tickets for the performance and dinner is Monday, Sept. 26.

Marchant said the music for “American Tapestry” honors the many and diverse threads that run through the traditions of our country's musical heritage.

“The program is organized around celebrated American poets, composers, and musical styles,” Marchant said. “Included in the evening will be poetry by Longfellow, Whitman, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Sara Teasdale, and Langston Hughes. Among the composers represented will be Stephen Foster, George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, and Paul Simon.”

Marchant said the program draws on folk roots from many corners of the country and will acknowledge our country’s struggles as well as its victories. There will be touches of jazz, musical theater, gospel, barbershop, bluegrass, country, spirituals, vaudeville, and southern harmony.

“The evening will provide a snapshot of the fertile ground that has yielded such a wealth of marvelous music since the birth of our nation,” Marchant said.

Money raised from the dinner performances helps support the PSU Choirs’ touring program. For tickets, call 620-235-4467.
