Summer enrollment up 5 percent

Pittsburg State University enjoyed a significant increase in enrollment during the 2016 summer session.
According to Registrar Debbie Greve, 2,648 students enrolled in the 450 courses offered this summer. That is a nearly 5 percent increase over last year’s enrollment count of 2,524. The number of graduate students increased by nearly 10 percent from 1,008 in 2015 to 1,108 this year.
The 450 courses offered this year was up by 12 over last year.
Lynette Olson, Pittsburg State provost and vice president for academic affairs, said she is pleased to see more students taking advantage of the university’s enhanced summer offerings.
“Students have many choices for how they will spend their summer, and I believe Pittsburg State offers great opportunities for them to make additional progress toward completing their programs of study,” Olson said.
Also up this summer was the number of online courses. The university added 15 additional online courses over last year’s count, jumping from 167 in 2015 to 182 this year. Nearly 1,500 students enrolled in at least one online course this summer.
“Over the past several years, many of our faculty who teach summer courses have devoted time to construct online courses, which expands opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students,” she said. “Our Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology provides tremendous support for faculty to assure that these online courses enhance student learning.”
Olson credited the Pitt State faculty with working hard to provide more summer course opportunities.
“I greatly appreciate the effort our faculty dedicate to plan and offer courses that entice students to enroll in online as well as face-to-face courses during the summer,” she said. “Whether during the summer or the regular academic year, students quickly find out that our faculty, staff and administrators make every effort to accommodate the needs of students. They work with students to assure that they are enrolled, receive needed services, and that they are able to be successful.”
