New Gorillas move in

When Carolyn and Larry Lewis, from Tulsa, Okla., pulled into the Nation Hall parking lot Saturday, a half dozen red-shirted volunteers descended on their car to help them move their son, Adam, into his residence hall room at Pittsburg State University.

Carolyn, who occasionally had to brush back tears, said the warm welcome they got was impressive.

Adam, who plans to major in construction management, was among nearly 1,000 to move in during PSU’s annual Move-In Day.

Carolyn said it was an emotional day for her.

“I’m excited for him,” she said. “You want them to grow up and this is an important step.”

PSU President Steve Scott, one of the many student, faculty and staff Move-In Day volunteers, said he heard many similar stories as he helped students move in.

“It is a very special day,” Scott said. “It is the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of the students and they are excited and probably also a little bit anxious. It’s just as big a day for the parents. We want them all to feel that they’re now part of the Pitt State family and we’re going to support and care for this new generation of Gorillas in every way possible.”
