Band preps for fall

The PSU football team isn’t the only group of Gorillas working hard before the semester begins at Pittsburg State. The Pride of the Plains Marching Band is also using these days before school starts to prepare for the fall semester.

Doug Whitten, who directs the band, said the students began checking in Monday and each day this week is crammed full.

“We start at 8:30 a.m. each day and finish up with a social activity at 8 p.m.,” Whitten said.

On Tuesday, the band held drum line auditions and rehearsal, as well as section leader and drum major training. Wednesday is devoted to more rehearsals and paperwork.

The entire band will hit the field for marching practice Thursday morning, followed by marching, music and sectional rehearsals that afternoon and evening. There’s more marching rehearsal on Friday, as well as music rehearsal by sections. The final rehearsal of the camp is back on the practice field Saturday morning.

“It’s an intense week, but there’s a lot to learn,” Whitten said. “It’s also an important time for the band to bond socially.”

Whitten said he looks forward to band camp every year.

“It’s hectic and hard work, but there’s so much energy and excitement,” Whitten said. “The new members are looking forward to being part of this special group and the returning members can’t wait to get back to be with their friends. It’s a special time.”
