President Scott attends national security program

In this presidential election year, national security is a topic that is discussed and debated almost daily by candidates and pundits. Last week, Pittsburg State President Steve Scott received a first-hand look at what the phrase “national security” truly means.

Scott was selected to participate in this year’s Commandant’s National Security Program at the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pa. The program took place July 18-21. 

The purpose of the CNSP is to enhance student learning through discussions on national security-related topics with invited civilian guests and to expose those guests to the future military senior leadership. Those invited to attend were leaders in academia, business, government, media, and other prominent organizations.

“I was honored and excited to be a part of this year’s Commandant’s National Security Program,” Scott said. “It was a fascinating look at many aspects of our country’s national security efforts. It really gave me a greater appreciation for the complex issues facing our military leaders as they seek to secure America's future and its place in the world.”

Scott was invited to participate by Lt. Col. Dirk Christian, a member of the Kansas Army National Guard, who is completing his master’s degree in strategic leadership from the U.S. Army War College.

“Lt. Col. Christian was an outstanding host for me, as were his classmates and the entire staff of the War College,” Scott said.

Scott said Pittsburg State has a long tradition of support for the military.

“It was clear that Pittsburg State’s tradition of support for the military through our ROTC program, shared facilities, and the Veterans Memorial had a lot to do with this opportunity," Scott said.

The CNSP consisted of a series of individual presentations and seminars on national security-related topics by nationally recognized experts. In addition to the primary presentations, there were also lectures on various subjects related to national security and a tour of the Gettysburg battlefield.
