KTC hosts various summer workshops

Investment Casting Institute

Investment casting professionals from around the world will be at Pittsburg State University next week for the annual Investment Casting Institute certification course.

The course, in its 16th year at PSU, is conducted at the Kansas Technology Center and is hosted by Russ Rosmait, PSU faculty member and director of the Investment Casting Training Center. The course gives industry professionals a chance to hone their skills in investment casting techniques and processes.

The course runs from June 1 to June 10 at the KTC. The curriculum includes lessons on casting design, waxes, metallurgy and casting finishing.

“Some of what we discuss is a refresher for many of the students, and some of it is brand new methods that are available because of new technology,” Rosmait said. “The professionals come from all over because they want to be the best they can be and stay on top of advancements in their field.”

WoodWorking Boot Camp

Wood technology professionals from across the nation were at Pittsburg State in May for the third annual Woodworking Boot Camp session. The week-long event took place May 16-20 at the Kansas Technology Center.

Created by Pitt State wood technology faculty Doug Hague and Charlie Phillips, the Boot Camp is a comprehensive wood processing overview geared toward supply-side companies in the wood industry who wish to further educate their workforce. It is conducted in coordination with the Woodworking Machinery Industry Association (WMIA) and the Wood Technology Industry Institute (WTII).

Designed for sales professionals, sales managers, product managers and executives, the course aims to broaden the understanding of secondary wood manufacturing companies.

“We were excited to host another Woodworking Boot camp,” Hague said. “We cover many different areas of manufacturing from CAD/CAM design through CNC to veneering, cabinetry, woods, tooling, millwork, and the list goes on. It’s a wonderful learning opportunity for all who attend.”

For their roles in creating the Boot Camp, Hague and Phillips were honored in 2015 as Educators of the Year at the Woodworking Industry Conference.

School of Construction workshops

The Pittsburg State University School of Construction is hosting a series of summer workshops for industry professionals.

The series began in mid-May at the Kansas Technology Center with the ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade 1 workshop. The certification course is offered to technicians employed by concrete suppliers, contractors, testing labs, government agencies and other organizations within the concrete industry.

Other workshops scheduled for this summer include an ACI Concrete Strength Tester Seminar, ACI-CRSI Adhesive Anchor Installation Seminar and ACI Aggregate Technician Level 1 Certification Seminar Test.

Robotics/Construction

In mid-July, the KTC hosts the annual Adventures in Robotics and Construct Your Future workshops.

Adventures in Robotics is a series of hands-on workshops for children conducted each summer by the Pittsburg State College of Technology faculty. Topics to be covered include teamwork, programming, brainstorming, construction techniques, robotic basics and electro-mechanics.

The Construct Your Future workshop is a fast-paced look at the materials, processes, and design methods involved in the construction industry.  Students will receive first-hand experience on material classification and usage.

Both workshops begin July 11 and are open to children ages 9 to 14.
