Students win record awards from Kansas Association of Broadcasters

For the second year in a row, student broadcasters from Pittsburg State University will bring home a record number of state broadcasting awards from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters student awards ceremony on April 5. The PSU students are scheduled to pick up a total of 38 state awards.

Troy Comeau, director of the Broadcasting Program in the Department of Communication, said he was proud of the number and variety of awards the students won and the hard work the recognition represents.

“I couldn’t be more proud of how hard our students have worked this year,” Comeau said. “We do the best we can to provide the instruction and equipment to set the students up for success at Pittsburg State. What they do with that instruction and equipment really shows up each year in state, regional and national awards.”

Comeau noted an increase in awards associated with radio broadcasting.

“Trent Kling and Leo Hudson have really done a great job in shaping the direction of Gorilla Radio and our audio production track,” Comeau said. “We are making plans for Gorilla Radio to function as a full-time, over-the-air broadcast station. Currently they can only be found on our cable access station CAPS 13 or through internet streaming.”

The PSU students competed in a variety of broadcasting categories against students from all other colleges and universities in the state of Kansas. Pitt State received 17 first-place awards, 14 second-place awards, and seven honorable mention awards this year.
