Jazz ensembles set spring concert

The Pittsburg State University jazz ensembles will present their final 2015-16 concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts. The concert includes both the Jazz One O'clock band and the Jazz Two O'clock band with student conductors Alex Wiedemann and Chris Goddard.

This free concert will feature a range of pieces to please jazz lovers of all types, according to Bob Kehle, director of jazz studies at PSU.

“The program includes classic jazz tunes like “It Might as Well Be Spring,” “All the Things You Are,” “Jumpin’ at the Woodside,” and Kurt Weil's “Mack the Knife,” as well as works from the Basie Orchestra like “Too Close for Comfort” and the Stan Kenton classic, “Maleguena,” Kehle said.

The concert will feature two long-time members of the band, Tom Lawlor on trumpet on a Pat Metheny work called “Always and Forever,” and Alex Wiedemann on alto sax on a piece entitled “But Beautiful.”
