Greek Week highlights unity, service

Toward the end of a dodgeball match at the 2016 Greek Games, sophomore Rae Zeller found herself alone against three fierce competitors.

And while she ultimately succumbed to the numbers disadvantage, she did so with a big smile on her face.

“It’s just so much fun,” said Zeller, the vice president of operations for the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority at Pitt State. “That’s what I love about Greek life at PSU. We can compete against each other at times, but it’s always in a friendly way. In the end, we’re always family.”

That sense of family and unity is at the heart of Greek Week, which runs from April 8 to April 14.

“The purpose of Greek Week is to show pride in our organizations, to promote unity among the Greek community and to create a positive image to independent students and community members,” Greek Adviser Meagan Smejdir said.

The week of activities includes popular events such as The Big Event community service project, Greek Games and Airband. Greek Week also features the Order of Omega Awards Ceremony, Canned Art and a Faculty Appreciation ceremony.

Ryan Schulteis, a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and the Greek Week chair for the Interfraternity Council, said his favorite part of Greek Week is seeing the camaraderie among the Greek students.

“I enjoy watching everyone work together this whole week to accomplish things we wouldn't normally be able to do with only our chapter,” he said. “It really shows just how connected we feel to each other, to the university and to our community.”

Zeller said Greek Week also highlights the many opportunities afforded to students who get involved with Greek life.

“Being in a sorority or a fraternity is about more than just meeting new people and having a good time,” she said. “We work very hard to not only represent PSU well, but also to serve PSU and to serve each other. We take great pride in what we do, and I’ve grown so much as a person by being a part of the Greek organization.”
