A new billboard going up on the U.S. 69 bypass in Pittsburg honors women in the construction industry.
The billboard, which features Pittsburg State construction students and construction industry professionals, is being unveiled as part of the national Women in Construction Week, an initiative of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC).
“The billboard aims to bring awareness to and celebrate women in the construction industry,” said Jenny McCool, instructor in the Pitt State School of Construction and treasurer of the local chapter of NAWIC. “It’s wonderful that our students are featured, as it draws attention not only to them but also to the outstanding School of Construction we have at Pittsburg State.”
The billboard is expected to be installed along U.S. 69 on Wednesday.
On Tuesday evening, Pittsburg Mayor Chuck Munsell signed a proclamation recognizing March 6-13 as Women in Construction Week. At 5:30 p.m. Thursday, the local NAWIC chapter will hold its monthly meeting, at which it will celebrate Women in Construction Week with door prizes, games, snacks and more.
“It’s very important that we continue to encourage women to consider a career in the construction industry,” McCool said. “Construction isn’t just about hammers and nails. It’s a big industry with many different facets, and women are increasingly playing an important role in many of those areas.”
