Art inspires interdisciplinary lecture series

Art gets people talking and that’s the point of the Pittsburg State University Art Department’s Interdisciplinary Education through the Arts Lecture (IDEA) Series on Thursday, Feb. 18.

Each year the PSU Museum of Art selects certain exhibits from its programming season to highlight through the IDEA Series. This event is intended to generate discussion based off of ideas suggested by the artwork from a variety of viewpoints.

Ten speakers – most from various disciplines across campus – will share research and personal stories connected to the theme, “Collective Memory,” which is inspired by two current exhibits. Those exhibits are “Collective Fusion,” a show that features the wide ranging talents of faculty, staff and friends of the university; and the “Kansas People’s History Project.”

The speakers will speak in 20-minute blocks, beginning with Olive Sullivan at 10 a.m., with a break for lunch. The keynote address will be delivered by the “Kansas History Project’s” David Loewenstein at 3 p.m. Those scheduled to speak include: Xiaolu Wu, associate professor of biology; J.T. Knoll, wellness and prevention coordinator; Norman H. Philipp, assistant professor School of construction; S. Portico Bowman, professor of art; Steve Cox, curator of special collections; Don Viney, professor of history, philosophy and social sciences; Megan L. Bever; and James Greene, assistant professor of English and modern languages. All of the speeches will be delivered in the Overman Student Center Sunflower Room.

A reception will be held at 4 p.m. in the Porter Hall Krug Gallery.
