Scholarship deadline approaching

Every Pitt State student (or potential Pitt State student) should have February 1 circled in red on his or her calendar. That’s the deadline for applying for campus scholarships and there are literally millions of dollars at stake.

Tammy Higgins, director of student financial assistance at PSU, said that so far this academic year, the university has provided more than $6.4 million in scholarships.

“For very many students,” Higgins said, “these funds are the difference between earning a college degree and not earning one. Scholarships also help reduce the amount of debt students face when they graduate.”

Because scholarships are so important to the success of students, it is one of the areas of focus of the university’s current capital campaign, “Proven. Promise. Pitt State.” The campaign’s goal for scholarships is $20 million.

Higgins said students can learn more about available scholarships and fill out an on-line scholarship application on the Student Financial Assistance website.

Higgins said she advises students to provide as much information about extra curricular or community-based involvement as possible on their scholarship applications. She also encourages students to think beyond the university-based scholarships.

“Don't just complete the general PSU application,” Higgins said. “Go outside our walls into the community, into the state or do online searches to reach more resources. And don't forget to use your networking skills in the community or high school setting. Sometimes, parents’ employers also have some options that you might be unaware of.”
