The Department of History, Philosophy and Social Sciences at Pittsburg State University will present a multi-disciplinary discussion of the Kansas Campus Weapons Possession Policy at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27, in Room 409 Russ Hall. The event, which is part of the department’s Current Events Series, is free and open to the public.
The 2013 Kansas Legislature enacted a statute to allow the concealed carry of handguns into public buildings, except those with adequate security measures at all public entrances. The enactment was codified at K.S.A. 2014 Supp. 75-7c20. Kansas universities are exempt from the statute until July 1, 2017.
A panel of social scientists, including Roy Janisch from Criminal Justice; Darren Botello-Samson and Paul Zagorski from Political Science; and Don Viney from Philosophy, will discuss the statute, the imminent change, and the potential impact of this change on the campus workplace as it affects scholars, researchers, and teachers.
