Illness forces change in Solo & Chamber performance

Late Wednesday, organizers for Pittsburg State University’s Solo and Chamber Music Series learned that illness would prevent pianist Andre Laplante from performing on Friday, Jan. 15, as planned. The concert will go on, however, with an equally distinguished artist as a substitute.

Internationally acclaimed pianist Christopher Taylor will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15, in the Sharon K. Dean Recital Hall in McCray Hall.

“We are fortunate that Christopher Taylor was able to work this performance into his busy concert schedule,” said Susan Marchant, chair of the Department of Music at PSU. “He is an outstanding artist.”

Although Taylor is known for his passion for music written in the past century, his repertoire spans four centuries and includes the complete Beethoven sonatas, the Liszt Transcendental Etudes, Bach’s Goldberg Variations, and a multitude of other familiar masterworks.

Taylor has performed around the globe and with some of the world’s major orchestras. He was named an American Pianists’ Association Fellow for 2000, received an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1996 and the Bronze Medal in the 1993 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. In 1990, he took first prize in the William Kapell International Piano Competition, and also became one of the first recipients of the Irving Gilmore Young Artists’ Award.

In addition to his busy concert schedule, he currently serves as Paul Collins Professor of Piano Performance at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Tickets for the performance are $12 for general admission and $8 for persons over 65 or under 18. Full-time PSU students are admitted free with a valid ID. Tickets are available at the PSU Ticket Office, 1701 S. Homer Street, 620-235-4796, or at the door the evening of the performance.
