Homebuilding expert speaks at PSU

One of the nation’s leading home building experts will visit Pittsburg State University next week to host a presentation for industry professionals and students.

Al Trellis, co-founder of Home Builders Network and a 40-year veteran of the home building industry, will speak from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom of the Overman Student Center.

Trellis’s presentation, titled “From Feeble Financials to Exceptional Earnings,” provides industry professionals with tips and lessons on how to increase profitability while building. The presentation also gives students a valuable look into the world of home building.

The event is free for PSU students and $20 for non-students.

“Al Trellis is an acclaimed, leading expert in this field, and we are thrilled to welcome him to our campus and community,” said Justin Honey, associate professor in Pitt State’s School of Construction. “This will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to hear from one of the best and to get a close look at the ins and outs of residential construction.”

Honey said Trellis will discuss the business side of construction, as well as the building aspects.

“We talk a lot about how the construction industry isn’t just about hammers, nails and building things,” Honey said. “It’s a business, and understanding that side of the industry is just as important as knowing how to build something. Mr. Trellis’s presentation will enhance the students’ understanding of the business side and give them a chance to learn tips and tricks from a true master of his craft.”

Home Builders Network provides management consulting, marketing, residential design, and land planning for home builders throughout the U.S. and Canada. Collectively, their clients build 3,000 homes per year, for a sales value of $1.2 billion. Six of their clients have been awarded the prestigious “America’s Best Builder” award through the National Association of Home Builders.

Trellis is the author of many books on residential construction, including his most recent book, “Building with an Attitude.” He has served as chairman of the NAHB Custom Builder, Education, and Business Management committees. As chairman of the Custom Builder Committee, he helped create the Custom Builder Symposium, and chaired the symposium for its first five years.

A frequent speaker at national and local seminars and workshops, Trellis is consistently rated as one of the country’s leading speakers at the NAHB International Builders Show.
