PSU Choirs produce holiday CD

The old idiom “sing for your supper” means to do something for someone else in order to receive something in return. The Pittsburg State University Choirs, however, have actually been singing in order to earn a trip to England and Wales.

The students are using proceeds from their new CD of holiday and seasonal music, “Light in the Dark,” to help finance a tour of England and Wales next spring.

“The holiday CD is one of a number of projects mounted by the students to support their upcoming spring tour,” said Susan Marchant, director of the choirs and chair of the Department of Music. “We typically record one of these every other year, as we focus on the fundraising for each biennial tour.”

The choir began making the biennial recordings in 2007.

The CD includes a number of traditional carols and songs of the season, concluding with the older melody for “Auld Lang Syne” to usher in the New Year. It also contains two seasonal organ pieces by Romantic-era composers: “Quittez Pasteurs” (Come, leave your sheep), by French composer Léon Roques; and an intimate setting of “In dulci jubilo” (Good Christian Friends, Rejoice), by Franz Liszt. Most of the vocal pieces were recorded in the historic McCray Hall lobby, with instrumental support including harpsichord, guitars, bells, percussion, and cabinet organ.

The CDs are $15 and may be purchased at the Department of Music office in McCray Hall, 205 E. Lindburg, or by phone at 620-235-4467, or email at smarchant@pittstate.edu.
