Senior project helps those in need

For Pittsburg State University senior Madison Beard, organizing a clothing drive is both a way to help the needy and part of her educational experience.

Beard, a senior social work major from Olathe, has organized a community clothing drive to benefit the Storehouse of the Covenant Harvest Church. Volunteers from PSU and Storehouse members will accept gently used clothing and other donations from noon until 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, at Deja-Vu, 611 N. Broadway.

Beard said plastic bins for storage, infant and children’s clothing, children’s coats, hats, and gloves, baby blankets, tennis shoes, and winter coats, are among the greatest needs. The Storehouse, which the church operates as a community outreach, is open from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturdays.

Beard said she chose to do a clothing drive for her senior project because of the high rates of poverty in the region.

“This is a great opportunity to reach out to the community and make a difference in someone’s life,” Beard said.
