PSU hosts diversity conference

Pittsburg State University will host a conference Oct. 19-20 that is designed to help universities in the Kansas Board of Regents system address issues of diversity in more effective ways. The theme for the 2015 Michael Tilford Conference is “Diversity Practices: Culturally responsive strategies to champion diversity.”

Faculty, staff and administrators from throughout the Regents system will participate in workshops and listen to speakers who will talk about the challenges Kansas universities face in teaching diverse populations on their campuses.

Keynote speakers for the conference include Mirta M. Martin, president of Fort Hays State University; Brenda J. Allen, associate vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion at the University of Colorado, Denver; and Myra Gordon, associate provost for diversity at Kansas State University.

Participants will choose from a variety of workshops on topics like building stronger recruitment and retention efforts, using culturally responsive reading selections, implicit racial bias and best practices for increasing the STEM pipeline.

The Tilford Conference is held annually and has been at Wichita State University, Kansas State University and Emporia State University. This is the first time for PSU to host the conference.

The conference is named in honor of the late Michael Tilford, who was the Wichita State representative on the Regents Diversity and Multiculturalism Committee. In 1969, Tilford was one of 100 African-American educators from across the country who received Ford Foundation Grants for advanced graduate study. He received his doctorate from Oklahoma State University in 1970. Dr. Tilford also had a bachelor's degree from Langston University in mathematics/chemistry and a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University in science education. He was appointed dean of the Graduate School at WSU in 1988 and associate vice president for academic affairs in 1994.
