Groups plan Domestic Violence Month vigil

Pittsburg State University’s Students for Violence Prevention, in coordination with the Safehouse Crisis Center, will host a candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, in Gorilla Village on the PSU campus. The vigil is designed to honor victims of domestic violence, offer support to survivors of abuse and encourage others to take a stand against domestic violence.

The vigil, which is held each year in conjunction with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, will feature inspirational domestic violence survivor stories and live musical performance courtesy of Steve Angemeier. Attendees will be invited to write letters of encouragement to clients currently staying in the Safehouse Crisis Center in Pittsburg. Refreshments will be provided.

Students for Violence Prevention is a PSU student organization whose mission is to raise awareness and educate others about issues such as domestic violence, dating violence, sexual violence, stalking, and bystander behaviors; to inform victims where they can go for help; and to lead by example.

Safehouse Crisis Center is a non-profit agency in Pittsburg, housing women and children (including PSU students) who have been victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
