Artist to deliver DeGruson Lecture

Missouri artist Harlan Bonar will be the speaker for the 18th annual Gene DeGruson Memorial Lecture at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Special Collections reading room at Pittsburg State University’s Axe Library.

Bonar, from Knob Knoster, Mo., has worked outside mainstream artistic channels for more than 40 years. In recent years, however, his work has gained a broader audience. His work “Union Station in the Rain,” was included in the Top 50 juried choices of the 2011 Missouri State Fair Art Show and the Missouri Council of Arts selected the same work as the “signature image” for the 2012 Missouri Arts Council Awards.

Bonar’s subject matter ranges from historical dioramas to fiery Biblical scenes. His most recent series is based on the Civil War.

A number of Bonar’s works, currently on loan to Axe Library, will be on display. Following Bonar’s presentation, a reception for the artist will take place.

Axe Library is located at 1605 S. Joplin.
