Pittsburg State updates tailgating policies

Pittsburg State is well known for offering one of the best football game day atmospheres at the Division II level. In order to ensure fans and visitors continue to experience the very best, university officials today announced several updates to the tailgating policies.

The changes include a new start time for alcohol consumption (now 4 hours before kickoff) and a revised time for alcohol cessation (now 30 minutes prior to kickoff). In addition, alcohol carried into tailgating areas must be transported in standard, enclosed insulated beverage coolers.

“The revisions are minor but very important,” said Steve Erwin, vice president for student life. “We’ve experienced some instances of disruptive and disorderly conduct, especially in the parking lot north of the stadium, during our previous games. We want fans to have a fun time but to be able to do so in a safe and secure environment.”

Parking lot gates will continue to open at 7 a.m. but alcohol consumption will not be allowed until 10 a.m. Officials are also taking steps to help ensure traffic lanes remain open.

“We’re painting markers in the parking lot to help tailgaters to better see their boundaries,” said Erwin. “This should help keep lanes open for emergency responders.”

A full listing of tailgating policies and procedures is available on the Pittsburg State police and parking webpage or at pittstate.edu/tailgate.
