Pitt State reminds fans to practice Gorilla Tailgating on Family Day

It’s officially Standing Room Only (SRO) for the Gorillas’ Family Day football game with the Washburn Ichabods at Carnie Smith Stadium this Saturday. The game, which will kick off at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, will mark the second straight week the team has attracted more than 10,000 fans. Pittsburg State ranked third in national attendance during the 2014 season.

“It’s a reflection of our terrific fan base and the best game-day experience in Division II,” said Jim Johnson, director of intercollegiate athletics. “There’s something special about Saturdays at Carnie Smith Stadium.”

The forecast for Saturday is calling for sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s, nearly perfect football weather. The combination of packed stadium and great weather is expected to attract large tailgating crowds, which is leading university officials to issue a reminder about the importance of following university tailgating policies.

“We want fans to enjoy themselves but to do so in a respectful and safe manner,” said Steve Erwin, vice president for student life. “It’s important that we keep lanes in the parking lots open for first responders in the event of a medical emergency and that fans keep their areas as clean as possible.”

Parking lot gates will open at 7 a.m. on game day but Erwin reminds fans that alcohol consumption may not start in tailgating areas until 1 p.m.

“We want to provide our fans with a fun and family-safe atmosphere,” said Erwin. “Those who do intend to consume alcoholic beverage should do so responsibly. We will have law enforcement in the area to monitor and cite those who are underage. Our Game Day Shuttle will also be available to provide rides for those who may need one.”

Those who have attended a Pitt State game in the past have likely seen Gorilla spirit, in the forms of flags or markers, on display in the parking lots. Officials encourage showing support for the team but caution tailgaters to be careful with their setup.

“We have power lines overhead several of our tailgating areas,” said Erwin. “Officers will monitor the height and location of all displays for safety. In addition, we ask fans to respect their fellow tailgaters with the volume level of their music.”
